Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is a very special time -one last year with the friends we have grown up with- filled with challenge, emotion and fun. Together, everyone achieves more -we will work together as a team to bring out the best in ourselves and each other.

In Year 6 we have two golden rules:

Try your best…all of the time.

Be nice to everyone…all of the time.

We hope you’ve all had a lovely summer and we are looking forward to
having a brilliant final year at St Christopher’s.

We aim to not only get our children ready for SATs in the summer term, but also to ensure
they are ready for their next adventure in secondary school. By the end of this academic
year, the children will be more resilient, more independent and more mature – giving them
the skillset they need to be successful in their academic and social journeys ahead.

P.E Days

P.E will be on Mondays and Wednesdays this term. Please ensure pupils come to school in
their P.E kits on these days.

Homework and spellings

Homework will be handed out on Fridays and will be due in by the following Thursday.
Sometimes homework will be set online via our subscribed online learning programmes such
as Edshed, Oxford Reading Buddy or Purple Mash.

Year 5 /6 statutory words are available on Edshed for pupils to practice. These are words
that the Government say children should know how to spell by the end of Year 6. Please
support your child with practising these regularly at home as they will need to use these
words in their writing and in spelling tests. There will also be extra revision set on Edshed
every week, should your child wish to do extra grammar practice.

Reading matters

Please ensure that your child reads at home for at least 10 minutes every day and sign their
reading diaries every time they read with you at home. Research shows that reading
regularly improves your memory and comprehension (which will help in all areas of the
curriculum) and it can also help with stress and mental wellbeing. Children should bring their
reading books and diaries into school with them every day. We will encourage children to
pick a book from our class library which is suitable for their ability and also a genre / topic
they will find interesting.

Finally, we want this year to be filled with amazing memories that your child will remember
for the rest of their lives, starting with our wonderful planned trip to Ingestre Hall (more
details will be given in due course).

All we ask from your children is that they always try their best, always be kind to everyone
and always be on their best behaviour. Let the learning commence!

If you have any questions or concerns please email Mrs Pritchard and we can arrange a phone call or a meeting to discuss.

Thank you for your support.

Mrs Pritchard ([email protected]) and

Mr Brown ([email protected]).

SPRING TERM

We are learning…

R.E

Confirmation

Year 6 children will be embarking on the exciting spiritual journey towards their Sacrament of Confirmation this year. Children will be following a scheme of work titled ‘The People of God’ which will fully prepare them, through two R.E lessons a week, for the Blessed Sacrament.

It is essential that the Confirmandi (children who are to be Confirmed) attend mass and take part in the ‘Passport to Faith’ throughout the year.

Please see Father David as soon as possible to declare your interest in being Confirmed and to receive your ‘Passport to Faith’ card.

CONFIRMATION MASS is currently scheduled to take place on Thursday 20th June 2024 at 7pm.

Maths

In Year 6 there is a big focus on knowing and understanding the whole Key Stage 2 Curriculum. In class, we try to make learning as effective as possible by establishing a strong foundation of mathematical knowledge and then building upon it at a pace to suit each individual learner. Unit 2: Personal Relationships

Unit 2 – Personal Relationships aims to equip children with strategies for more complex experiences of relationships and conflict. This covers how to respond to spoken and unspoken pressure, the concept of consent and further teaching on how our thoughts and feelings have an impact on how we act. The concept of fairness is introduced, where pupils will consider what bullying, prejudice and discrimination are. A series of Classroom Shorts further explore how to recognise and respond to prejudice and discrimination. Focus is also given to what attraction is and children will also explore the concept of gender stereotypes and how these stereotypes might make us feel. This is all presented within the Christian belief that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God, is loved unconditionally by Him, has equal dignity and is deserving of equal respect.
